Abstract

A method is proposed to determine the total ozone in the atmosphere from measurements made with the Dobson spectrophotometer at any three of the standard wavelength pairs by approximating the coefficients of large particle scattering by a power law function.

On the basis of the scattering theory of large particles it is shown that the absorption coefficients of ozone as recommended by the International Ozone Commission (except for B wavelength pair which should be 1.1506) are more appropriate for use in conjunction with measurements of total ozone amount by a Dobson spectrophotometer.
