Abstract

A method for the graphical integration of the vorticity equation is presented, which includes the effects of terrain-induced vertical velocities. The prediction equation is applied to a series of l000-mb charts. The tests show that the inclusion of the terrain factor materially improved the prognosis in mountainous areas. When applied to the 500-mb chart, there was no significant improvement, primarily because of an additional severe assumption relating the surface and 500-mb winds.
