Abstract

A statistical procedure for forecasting the 500-mb contour height at grid points around the hemisphere is verified. Coefficients of Tschebycheff polynomials are used as predictors, and these are tested on an independent data sample. The results indicate satisfactory 24-hr forecasting value but less value when predictions are extended to 48 or 72 hr.
