Abstract

It has long been recognized that when the sun is low in the sky, the supernumerary bows disappear in the vertical portion of the rainbow. It is noted here that the red part of the rainbow also varies in intensity near the vertical portion of the bow. Both of these phenomena are ascribed to the nonspherical shape of large raindrops.
