Abstract

The complex eigenvalues of frequency are computed for Hough functions of negative equivalent depth, using the method of Longuet-Higgins. The positive kinetic wave energy and negative wave potential energy of unstable modes cancel. These unstable modes may be important in the solar convective zone as a means of sustaining solar differential rotation.
