Abstract

The key parameters controlling cumulus cloud-cover extent are derived by formulating a simple theory of the inversion-capped, convectionally unstable planetary boundary layer. The theory provides a predictive parameter which is found statistically to distinguish significantly between days of different cumulus cloud-cover formation.
