Abstract

A result of Winninghoff (1968), which later appeared in Arakawa and Lamb (1977), on the effect of finite differencing in the process of geostrophic adjustment in one dimension is shown to be erroneous. The correct result is provided, and Winninghoff's conclusions are reexamined. It is shown that the practical effect of the error is minimal for the difference scheme incorporated into the UCLA General Circulation Model (GCM), although quite noticeable for certain other differencing schemes.
