Calculations are carried out to determine the preferred contour heights at which fronts are found on upper isobaric charts, assuming the validity of a three-frontal model and of certain characteristic air-mass temperatures. In view of their proximity to fronts aloft, the axes of upper wind maxima should also demonstrate an association with preferred contour heights. Fletcher [1] has shown statistically that such is the case and his figures agree well with the calculated heights.
