The Next Generation Upper Air System (NEXAIR) presently under development by the Weather Bureau is intended to satisfy the needs of the meteorological community for atmospheric data from balloon borne instrument packages during the mid 1970s and beyond. In saddition to NAVAID (Loran-C and/or Omega) windfinding, the system is expected to include new approaches to atmospheric sensing, circuit design, data transmission and ground processing. An overview of the basic system functional design approach is provided along with a discussion of various facets of the NAVAID windfinding problem.
