The Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau has a profound influence on atmospheric circulation patterns on all time and space scales. This report constitutes a short summary of work being performed at the Lanzhou Institute of Plateau Atmospheric Physics of the Academia Sinica. A short discussion of the climatic characteristics of the plateau is followed by a description of the main features of annual and diurnal cycles in pressure and circulation patterns.

1 Prof. Y.-X. Gao is now Director of the Lanzhou Institute of Plateau Atmospheric Physics, Academia Sinica. He is responsible for research projects concerning the meteorology of the Tibetan Plateau in China. His institute was founded in 1972 with an emphasis on studies of the general circulation, severe weather events, droughts, local weather phenomena such as dry and hot winds, and hail suppression in northwest China and in Tibet. The South Asian monsoon and the unique synoptic systems over Tibet have received special consideration. During the past decade, many achievements have been made. They have been summarized in a book under the title The Meteorology of the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau (see Gao, 1979a, b). (Comments by E. R. Reiter.)
