TRMM Diabatic Heating
The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, launched in 1997, has now produced an unprecedented decadal record of tropical rainfall and convective system vertical structure as seen by radar and passive microwave sensors. This dataset can be used to derive information on the contributions of latent heating, eddy flux convergence, and radiative heating to the total diabatic heating profile, a strong constraint on tropical circulations and variability. This special collection is composed of papers that derive, test, and compare different approaches for producing diabatic heating profiles from the TRMM dataset. The papers highlight the challenges involved in capturing the separate deep convective, stratiform, and shallow convective contributions to the heating and present a first look at the mean diabatic heating distribution over the tropics. The articles will be presented below as they are published.
