Abstract

An evaluation is made of the Abbot pyranometer as a reference standard. Operating accessories for manual operation are described as is a completely automatic operating system. Performance tests of time constant, cosine response and attitude are reported on.

Calibration as a pyrheliometer resulted in a repeatability of the mean of ±0.1% and an average deviation of ±0.25%. When used as a pyranometer a comparsion is made with conventional occulting techniques. The Abbot pyranometer has been incorporated into the Canadian Meteorological Service group of reference standards.
