Abstract

In a recent paper, explicit expressions have been derived for obtaining and subsequently partitioning streamfunction growth rates for a class of quasigeostrophic models. Unfortunately, however, some typographical errors have been made in the final representation of the equations. It is the aim of this corrigendum to give the correct expressions. The author notes that the results in the two-paper miniseries on “Resonance in Optimal Perturbation Evolution” by de Vries and Opsteegh have been obtained using the correct expressions, as listed as Eqs. (1),(3) below.

In section 7b of de Vries and Opsteegh (2007a), a typographical error has been made in Eq. (24). This equation defines the contribution to the local streamfunction growth rate from the Orr mechanism. The original Eq. (24) reads

The various matrices have been defined in the original article (de Vries and Opsteegh 2007a). The correct version of this equation is

where the large dot symbol • is used to define the Hadamard product (component-wise multiplication) of two matrices; that is, [𝗣 • 𝗤]ij = PijQij (no sum implied). Furthermore, [𝗖𝗿(t)]ij = δijcj(t) as defined below Eq. (23) in de Vries and Opsteegh (2007a). It can be verified that [𝗖𝗿(t) − 𝗨]ij = δij ΣMk=1[(Δ · 𝗤y · 𝗚) • 𝗖𝗼(t)]jkQk/Qj.

A little bit farther down in the same section 7b of de Vries and Opsteegh (2007a), two typographical errors have been made in Eqs. (26)–(27). In the original paper, (26)–(27) have been written as
