U.S. CLIVAR Drought

This special collection of the Journal of Climate focuses on the physical mechanisms that produce drought, particularly multi-season, multi-year droughts, and in a broader sense provides a coordinated assessment of our current modeling capabilities and understanding of hydroclimatic variability throughout the world. The majority of the papers were submitted as part of either a U.S. CLIVAR drought working group project where the focus was on the analysis of atmosphere--land global circulation model (AGCM) experiments, or as part of the Drought In Coupled Models Project (DRICOMP), where the focus was on the analysis of simulations made with coupled atmosphere and ocean global circulation models (AOGCMs). As such, the two projects are complementary with the drought working group project providing a very controlled assessment of the impact of past sea surface temperature (SST) variations on drought, while the DRICOMP effort allows assessing the realism of the relevant simulated SST variations as well as assessing future drought under global warming scenarios. Specific issues that are addressed include the link between SST variations and continental drought, the role of land-atmosphere feedbacks, the seasonality of processes leading to drought, and how such mechanisms and their impacts might change in a warming climate. Collectively, these works point to the importance of ocean-atmosphere and land-atmosphere processes that are likely to be critical for simulating, and possibly predicting, multi-season drought using coupled climate models. The articles will be presented below as they are published.
