Abstract

The 1978 hurricane season produced 98 "tropical systems", of which 33 acquired the closed circulation of a depression. Over half of these 65 originated over the African Continent. African seedlings initiated 6 of the 11 named Atlantic storms, and 13 of the 18 east Pacific storms.

The 1976 hurricane mason produced 111 “tropical systems”, of which 23 acquired the closed circulation of a depression. Over half of these (68) originated over the African Continent. These are the most African systems observed since our annual summary began in 1968. African seedlings initiated four of the eight named Atlantic storms, and all but one of the fourteen East Pacific storms.

Abstract

The 1973 hurricane season featured 95 “tropical systems” of which 24 acquired the closed circulation of a depression. Atlantic “seedlings” were responsible for the seven named storms in the Atlantic and seven of the twelve East Pacific storms. Fifty-six of the systems originated over Africa.

Abstract

Stronger tropical depressions are associated with a recognizable vortical cloud pattern. This note summarizes the number and history of vortical cloud systems observed over the tropical Atlantic during the 1967 hurricane season. The appearance of a “vortical cloud” does not necessarily imply the depression will intensify.

Abstract

Radar echoes over the Florida peninsula have been recorded manually every 3 hr on a 7.5 by 7.5 mi grid during the past three summers. This note summarizes the echo distribution for the period May through August 1963. The spatial and temporal variations of convective activity were found to be highly correlated with the sea breeze.
