aerosol found by the aerosol subtyping algorithm ( Figs. 3c , 4c , 5c ) for three scenes observed on 12 August 2006. Figure 3 shows the distribution of aerosol types as the satellite passes over western Russia, continental Europe, across the Mediterranean Sea, and to the eastern Sahara Desert. The subtyping algorithm captures the evolution of the aerosol from smoke and polluted dust to pure dust in the Sahara.
