Pacific Ocean circulation and identified a westward mean undercurrent below the eastward flowing North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC), which they named the North Equatorial Subsurface Current (NESC). Its maximum mean geostrophic velocity exceeds 2 cm s −1 in the western Pacific Ocean, with a mean transport as large as 4.0 Sv (1 Sv = 10 6 m 3 s −1 ) toward the entrance of the Indonesian Throughflow.
