the majority of precipitation falls in July and August. Both of these mechanisms were largely absent or inoperative to a considerable degree in 2012 over the central Great Plains. Diagnosis of 500-hPa height anomalies during summer 2012 reveals considerable monthly variability ( Fig. 5 ), implying that the drought was not a consequence of some steady sustained forcing.
