Abstract

Structural properties of two samples of hailstones were investigated in terms of total and shell density, crystal size and orientation, and appearance (opaque and transparent). The lowest densities found with a newly developed bore method were 0.82 gm cm−3, occurring occasionally in the region of the hailstone embryo or in opaque shells. Specific values for the normalized modal frequency of the c′ axis distribution and the mean crystal surface separate ice crystals formed under dry growth conditions with a density below 0.88 gm cm−9 from those under dry growth or spongy growth conditions but with densities above that value. Not only does the appearance change considerably from shell to shell but so do the crystallographic properties. Average descriptions are given for both samples.
