Abstract

Three years (1974–76) of wind data for stations 1.5, 20 and 55 km from the eastern shore of Lake Michigan are analyzed to determine effects of the lake on seasonal and annual distributions of wind speed and direction. The results are interpreted in terms of both specific lake breeze effects and lake effects in general.

Specific lake breeze effects are most evident at the station 1.5 km from the lake. They include a faster rate of increase of average wind speed in the morning and more circular hodographs than at the stations further inland. At the station 20 km inland, lake breeze effects are more subtle. A change in the rate of increase of wind speed, associated with the passage of the lake breeze, is evident in the summer season but not on an annual basis. Lake breeze effects that are evident there on an annual basis include a high frequency of occurrence of variable wind directions and wind directions which differ by 90° or more from those at the shoreline station. In addition, the summer and annual hodographs are slightly more circular than those for the station 55 km inland. That station shows no evidence of lake breezes or their effects.

General lake effects are evident at all three stations both in summer and on an annual basis. The hodographs for these stations, as well as for a station more than 175 km inland, have orientations and shapes that indicate significant diurnal response to the east–west (across-shore) wind component, not evident at stations upwind of the lake.

Abstract

Measurements of turbidity were made at the University of Michigan irradiance and meteorological measurement facility just prior to, during and after the passage of the volcanic cloud from the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. They were made with a Volz sunphotometer at wavelengths of 500 and 880 nm.

The volcanic cloud gradually moved over the measurement facility on the afternoon of 20 May and remained over it until 2300 GMT 21 May. Its effects on the turbidity coefficient and wavelength exponent in Ångström's turbidity equation are evaluated by comparing results for 20 and 22 May, both of which were cloudless days, with those on 21 May. The volcanic cloud increased the turbidity coefficient by a factor of about 8 and decreased the wavelength exponent by a factor of about 3 compared to average values for 20 and 22 May. Some uncertainty in the results is caused by cirriform clouds in addition to the volcanic cloud on 21 May. These results and effects of the volcanic cloud on recordings of global, direct normal and diffuse solar irradiances are described.

Abstract

During the 2005 NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Experiment two different high-resolution configurations of the Weather Research and Forecasting-Advanced Research WRF (WRF-ARW) model were used to produce 30-h forecasts 5 days a week for a total of 7 weeks. These configurations used the same physical parameterizations and the same input dataset for the initial and boundary conditions, differing primarily in their spatial resolution. The first set of runs used 4-km horizontal grid spacing with 35 vertical levels while the second used 2-km grid spacing and 51 vertical levels.

Output from these daily forecasts is analyzed to assess the numerical forecast sensitivity to spatial resolution in the upper end of the convection-allowing range of grid spacing. The focus is on the central United States and the time period 18–30 h after model initialization. The analysis is based on a combination of visual comparison, systematic subjective verification conducted during the Spring Experiment, and objective metrics based largely on the mean diurnal cycle of the simulated reflectivity and precipitation fields. Additional insight is gained by examining the size distributions of the individual reflectivity and precipitation entities, and by comparing forecasts of mesocyclone occurrence in the two sets of forecasts.

In general, the 2-km forecasts provide more detailed presentations of convective activity, but there appears to be little, if any, forecast skill on the scales where the added details emerge. On the scales where both model configurations show higher levels of skill—the scale of mesoscale convective features—the numerical forecasts appear to provide comparable utility as guidance for severe weather forecasters. These results suggest that, for the geographical, phenomenological, and temporal parameters of this study, any added value provided by decreasing the grid increment from 4 to 2 km (with commensurate adjustments to the vertical resolution) may not be worth the considerable increases in computational expense.

Abstract

This article provides an overview of the NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission and a summary of selected scientific findings to date. ATom was an airborne measurements and modeling campaign aimed at characterizing the composition and chemistry of the troposphere over the most remote regions of the Pacific, Southern, Atlantic, and Arctic Oceans, and examining the impact of anthropogenic and natural emissions on a global scale. These remote regions dominate global chemical reactivity and are exceptionally important for global air quality and climate. ATom data provide the in situ measurements needed to understand the range of chemical species and their reactions, and to test satellite remote sensing observations and global models over large regions of the remote atmosphere. Lack of data in these regions, particularly over the oceans, has limited our understanding of how atmospheric composition is changing in response to shifting anthropogenic emissions and physical climate change. ATom was designed as a global-scale tomographic sampling mission with extensive geographic and seasonal coverage, tropospheric vertical profiling, and detailed speciation of reactive compounds and pollution tracers. ATom flew the NASA DC-8 research aircraft over four seasons to collect a comprehensive suite of measurements of gases, aerosols, and radical species from the remote troposphere and lower stratosphere on four global circuits from 2016 to 2018. Flights maintained near-continuous vertical profiling of 0.15–13-km altitudes on long meridional transects of the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean basins. Analysis and modeling of ATom data have led to the significant early findings highlighted here.
