From continuity considerations, a formula is developed for the pressure tendency at a given point in an isentropic surface in terms of the pressure tendency at the ground and the wind distribution in the layer of air between the ground and the chosen isentropic surface. A method is described for computing the pressure tendency field in the isentropic surface from radiosonde and pilot balloon data; and the application of the knowledge of this tendency field to forecasting the motion of the isentropic pressure field is discussed. It is also indicated how the formula for the isentropic pressure tendency may be modified for use in forecasting stability changes in the free air.

Abstract

With the assumption of nondivergent horizontal flow, harmonic wave solutions of the complete vorticity equation are obtained both for the plane and for the sphere. These solutions yield, for the velocity of propagation of the waves, formulae which are identical in form with those obtained by Haurwitz from an approximate linearized form of the vorticity equation. However, it is shown that these formulae must be interpreted quantitatively somewhat differently than heretofore. Qualitatively, the interpretation is unchanged. The motion of the waves toward the east decreases with increasing wave length, and increases with increasing westerly current.
