Abstract

Simultaneous soundings of the lower atmosphere using a monostatic acoustic sounder and tethered balloonborne sensors are compared. Within the coincident range (40–350 m) of the two sounding systems a good agreement between the soundings is found in terms of the position of statically stable zones in the atmosphere. Only rarely are the acoustic sounder records not amenable to interpretation exclusively on the basis of the thermal structure of the lower atmosphere.
