Abstract

The vertical circulation and the changes of atmospheric structure during the formation of a shear line in the upper atmosphere are studied. The vertical distribution of divergence and convergence at the trough line is determined, assuming adiabatic processes. A scheme for the process of formation of an upper shear-line is proposed. A comparison of this process with that involved in the formation of upper cut-off cold lows is presented.
