On July 20, 1949 what are thought to be the first photographs of the radar indication of lightning strokes were obtained by the Weather Radar Research Project of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The method of radar lightning detection is described, and suggestions are made for research in this field. Possible uses of the observation include positive determination of certain precipitation cells as thunderstorms and their identification as such in rareps.

* Published as a contribution from the Weather Radar Research project under contract with Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories.
