An abbreviated southern oscillation is formulated which correlates highly with Walker's complete southern oscillation. With the abbreviated southern oscillation the high lag correlation coefficient of the southern oscillation from June–August to the following December–February is verified with data for the additional decade, 1931–1940. The lag correlation coefficient between the June–August abbreviated southern oscillation and the following winter temperature of Southwest Canada is − 0.57.
