A Study of the Mean Southerly Wind-Maximum in Low Levels Associated with a Period of Summer Precipitation in the Middle West

A low-level jet in southerly winds is described making use of a mean cross-section for a 48-hour period when the pattern was nearly stationary. The period is that of heavy rains in Kansas which were associated with the Kaw (Kansas) River and Kansas City floods in July, 1951. Most of the moisture carried into the area of heavy precipitation, was transported in the low-level jet.
