Trends in atmospheric electricity are illustrated by means of four themes. These are that there is a constant and healthy change in the emphasis of research investigations; that practical applications of any research need to be kept in mind; that—even so—research of no obvious utility at its commencement can still suddenly become of immense importance; and that it is perhaps time for a new Thunderstorm Project. A plea is made for a greater emphasis on “national” rather than “international” research.

1 This is the approximate text of the review presented at the 54th Annual Meeting of the AMS in Honolulu, Hawaii, January 8–11, 1974.
