Reanalysis-I data were obtained through NOAA/ESRL. Data from the ERA-40 and ERA-Interim were downloaded via the ECMWF data server, and JRA-25 data were obtained from the JMA data server. IBTrACS data were made available by NOAA/NCDC through the World Data Center for Meteorology, while NOAA OI SST(V2) fields were obtained from NOAA/OAR/ESRL PSD. Notable advancements in this work occurred during the lead author’s extended visit to NCAR in April 2012 (funded by the MMM division). The authors also benefited from discussions with Chris Davis, Ayrton Zadra, John Gyakum, and Eyad Atallah during the development of the climatology and preparation of this manuscript. This work was supported in part by NSF Grants ATM-0849491 and AGS-0849356.
