There have been two recent changes to the editorial staff at the Journal of PhysicalOceanography (JPO) that we would like to bring to your attention.

First, we welcome Roger Samelson, Professor of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences,at Oregon State University as an additional fourth member. His editorial specialty willbe papers in coastal oceanography and midlatitude theory, subjects that were previouslyhandled by Jay McCreary and Nelson Hogg. (See the inside cover of each JPO issuefor a description of the subject areas of each editor.)

Second, Jay McCreary retired as Chief Editor on 30 June 1999 in order to devotemore time to his new responsibilities as Director of the International Pacific ResearchCenter at the University of Hawaii, but will remain as an editor. He is succeeded byPeter Müller, Professor of Oceanography, at the University of Hawaii and a JPO editorfor the past two years. The new editorial team continues to be committed to improvingits service to JPO contributors.

The new AMS procedures governing the review process, which were outlined ineditorials published in the January 1998 and 1999 issues of JPO, are now followed asclosely as possible by each JPO editor. These procedures were designed to hasten theprocess, and generally they have been successful in doing so. To further shorten thereview time we ask that

  • reviewers who find themselves unable to complete a review in time to please let usknow (so that a replacement can be found as quickly as possible)

  • contributors ensure that their manuscripts are in near final form before submission and

  • contributors think carefully about whether or not JPO is the most appropriate journalfor their acticle (as JPO focuses on ocean physics rather than experimental or modelingtechniques).

Please let us know of any specific problems you encounter in the review process, and of any specific suggestions you have for its improvement.
