Weather and Forecasting was published on a bimonthly basis for the first time during 1999. Two special issues, and a wide variety of articles related to forecasting techniques and validation procedures, were featured throughout the year. The average time from initial receipt of the draft manuscript to final publication for most of these contributions was slightly over a year. We trust we have been meeting your expectations in these respects and fulfilling the needs of the scientific and operational communities.

At present, Weather and Forecasting appears to be one of the few venues for professional publication where technically sound and scientifically rigorous material can be disseminated in a reasonable period of time. The more succinct papers, such as provocative discussions for “Forecasters’ Forum,” preliminary studies for the “Notes and Correspondence,” or unique and interesting “Photographs,” can be handled in an even more expeditious manner. We encourage you to take full advantage of this exceptional opportunity, especially in regard to the timely publication of the shorter contributions.
